Quest for Improvement
Coltrane's been my first serious character ever created. He's been basically heavily inspired by Anne Rice's characters (I was 18), but he's evolved and I believe he got a really strong and unique personality. My main problem is: I can't portray him. He's always changing looks and that's because I cannot paint what's inside my head. That does not happen with my other characters tho, it's just his case, which is kind of frustrating. Anyway, on to the technique. I wanted to do something else rather than the crosshatching, so I searched for skin brushes and this is the result. As I abused Photoshop and not Painter for first time in years, this portrait looks way too digital. I have mixed feelings towards this -I kind of feel like I cheated-, but I'll let you decide wether I'm improving or not. I decided I'll try out more things as I was getting tired of my current technique which I think was leading nowhere. Photoshop CS3, Painter 7 and X Awesome Skin Brushes: Edit: I couldn't sleep so after reading crits and suggestions I went back and fixed some things, mainly the eyes. |

Btw, I find your OC's eyes a bit too... 'dolly', they seem glass doll's eyes to me so his look is a bit too 'fixed' and a bit too big for a vampire; but it's only my opinion not a critique.
and sometimes it works *_*
skin looks real *_* but I think, that chin is a bit heavy... well, maybe we just have different taste ^^

Coming back to your technique above - it's not that digital as you feel, the face looks good, not plastic at all - I find over digitalised pieces done with brushes plastic. Maybe his hair make that effect - they're less refined than the face. I see you wanted to show depth of field and it works but in this case the hair in front would be a bit more defined, while the back would get just a little bit of refinement, too. Or maybe I'm just hair freak

Ehhhh, I like how you did his hair, especially the left-hand side. Very realistic. The first portrait of Coltrane you did is a very far cry from this.
Oh kakka now I feel like making fanarts. D:
